Kratom leaf is not banned federally, but states decide. Of 51 jurisdictions, 13 ban sales (Kentucky’s starts January 1, 2027), 6 require a seller licence or registration, 3 are under review and 29 allow sales. Federal action targets 7-OH and related compounds, and a DEA order on 7-OH cannot issue before about November 13, 2026.

Methodology

Primary sources first

Each row starts from the statute, rule, agency notice or official release for that state. When only news coverage was available, the state page says so.

Checked state by state

Every state has its own law page with sources and open questions. This table summarizes those pages and links to each one.

Dated and rechecked

Every row shows a last-verified date. Pending bills, emergency orders and federal action are rechecked on the dates shown on the bulk pages and after any federal order.

Clear about what we do not know

Where a rule is unconfirmed or secondary-sourced, the state page labels it. We do not fill gaps with guesses.
